The Sulcata Tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata), also known as the African Spur Thigh Tortoise, is one of the largest species of tortoises in the world. They have a distinctive appearance with a heavily-ridged shell, which provides protection. Their coloration ranges from light brown to yellowish, with a smooth, tan plastron (underside of the shell). As they age, their shells become more domed. They have strong, elephantine legs adapted for digging and walking long distances.

Sulcata Tortoises are known for their curious and active personalities. They can be quite social, often showing interest in their human caretakers. While they may not display affection in the same way as mammals, they can become accustomed to human interaction and may even enjoy being petted or scratched. However, they also have a stubborn streak and can be quite determined when they want something, such as finding a way out of their enclosure.
